Cory Kasperson and Zach Wolf jump started Valley Christian to a quick getaway and the Trojans were steady throughout on Saturday night in knocking off Cortez, 64-53, in the Division III boys state title game at Jobing.com Arena that wrapped up a six-title game set in Glendale.

Kapserson scored a game-high 24 points, including five 3s to lead Valley Christian(22-8) to its fifth boys hoops state title. The 24 points were also a season high, almost doubling his previous season best of 13 points.Wolf added 12 points and TJ Widner chipped in 12. Valley Christian and Cortez had split two games previously this season.

"We did shoot well," Valley Christiian coach Gref Haagsma said. "Tonight Cory was unbelievable. He's been a key member of this team, but how he played in this one, he came out of nowhere. Not just the scoring, but rebounding and going after loose balls. As a point guard, he set the tone."

Valley Christian produced a pair of hot streaks it rode to a 35-29 lead at halftime. The Trojans opened the game with a 9-0 run, saw that lead evaporate and eventually become a 23-21 deficit in the second quarter. A 14-2 burst over a four-minute span bumped the lead to 35-23. Cortez got late 3s in the half from Petrit Haliti and Avery Smith to cut the margin to single digits. VC shot 60 percent 15 of 25 from the fied in the opening half and 24 of 46 (52 percent) for the game.

Valley took a 47-40 lead to the final period and put the game away with back-to-back three-point plays by Wolf and Widner to begin the final stanza. Cortez got no closer than seven the rest of the way. Haagsma credited his team's defense and its rebounding as a key to the win.

Davon MacBeth scored 14 points to lead Cortez (25-4) and teammate Avery Smith added 13 before fouling out late. MacBeth sank four 3s in the game.
