Villa leads Westwood over Copper Canyon

The Westwood Warriors defeated the Copper Canyon Aztecs 13-3 in five innings, mainly because of the phenomenal game by Westwood's Jimmy Villa.

Villa hit a home run in the fourth inning, notched three RBIs and added a triple and two singles.

After the game Villa elaborated on his performance. “I was able to be so great in this game because I was not always trying to go deep like I always do. I was trying to hit the ball to the right side like Coach tells me everyday. Just staying focused on the game and the important job I did,” said Villa.

Villa drew the most excitement from home run. “It felt good, my first one of the season,” Villa said.

J.R. Langston, the head coach of Westwood, was impressed by his team's scoring, “Well, I think the guys were patient, looking for their pitch and looking to do their job. I think they had a good approach today and they came ready to play. They wanted to comeb ack from that bad loss on Friday,” he said.

Doug LaPalm, the head coach of Copper Canyon talked about how his team can improve after this tough loss. “We go back and keep practicing on the fundamentals of the game and if we make the routine plays it’s a different baseball game. We are within two runs and its' just routine baseballs are hit at and we make little mistakes. We gave up extra runs. We will keep working on the fundamentals of the game and getting our baseball IQ better. If you do these things and have a great foundation we will start having success,” said LaPalm.

Villa’s triple scored two in the fifth inning and made it 12-3. The game ended after Francisco Cardenas had a sacrifice fly that scored Villa.  

Westwood’s six-run third inning proved to the difference in the game. Copper Canyon could not recover from that inning.

Emilio Ibarra also stole two bases in the third inning including a steal of home. He also had a single in that inning.

Eric Makil, Cardenas, Manny Collier, Brenton Dyer and Erik Ortiz all had singles in the third inning that helped lead to the six-run spree.  

Westwood got off to a good start when Danny Berrelleza had a triple in the first inning. Ortiz had a single to make it 1-0. Villa and Cardenas both had RBIs to make it 3-0.

Copper Canyon did not get a hit until the third inning because of great pitching  by Ryan Posthumus.  Joe Romero had an RBI single in the third inning that made it 3-1.

Coming into the game Westwood was 5-3. Copper Canyon was 0-6 aand both teams opened section play Tuesday. Westwood’s next game is Wednesday at Perry at 3:45 p.m.
