Why it's big: It's a Friday-night battle of Top 5 teams in Arizona's Division I rankings this season, and two of the state's winningest teams overall during the past decade.

Chaparral, which trails only Centennial and Hamilton (Chandler) in total wins since 2003, has four consecutive wins after its Sept. 4 loss to nationally ranked Chandler. The Firebirds (5-1) had their highest scoring output of the last two seasons with a 61-14 drubbing of Horizon (Scottsdale) last week. Senior running back Kurt Shughart recorded his third-consecutive 100-yard rushing game and found the end zone three times.

Centennial (4-2) bounced back from a loss to region leader Hamilton on Sept. 24 with a 44-0 shutout of Boulder Creek (Anthem). Senior quarterback Isaac Steele threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score.

Names to watch: Three-star junior defensive end Brandon Jamison – a UC Davis recruit – leads Chaparral in tackles, tackles for loss and sacks this season.

On the other side of the ball, Centennial's Arizona State-committed guard Marshal Nathe anchors one of the top offensive lines in the state.
