Mesa Mountain View didn't have much time to celebrate an emotional, hard-fought win over one of the hottest teams in Division I, Mesquite, at home on Thursday. The Toros were back at it on the road at Desert Vista on Friday and for a bit Toros' coach Mike Thiel saw what he warned his team could happen.

"It was a big win (Mesquite), but I told them we don't have time to enjoy it since we have Desert Vista," Thiel said. "We had to stay focused."

The focus wasn't there all the time, but was when needed late as Mountain View scored four times in the fifth and four times in the sixth to rally for a 9-6 win at Desert Vista.

Two-and-a half weeks ago Mountain View was atop the D-I power rankings with an 8-0 record. A three-game losing streak saw the Toros plummet to around No. 15, but with three wins in their last four games they are trying to secure a top-8 finish and a bye in the first round of the state tournament that begins May 2. Mountain View is 17-7 overrall, 11-4 in power-rankings games. Desert Vista (10-13-1, 4-9) prg) is trying to stay afloat for a playoff berth, but an 0-3 week has put on a damper on the Thunder's ever-slimming hopes. The Thunder had a tight game Thursday night get away late in a 3-1 loss to Red Mountain. Red Mountain won despite collecting only two hits.

Three-game weeks are tough to navigate if a team doesn't have a deep staff. Both teams had to reach deep Friday combining to use nine pitchers (Desert Vista five and Mountain View four). The teams banged out 26 hits, but it was the Toros that had a few extra salvos that proved the difference.

Brent Bailey's RBI single and an error in left field started off Mountain View's game-cinching rally in the sixth. With a 7-6 lead the rally was capped by Jon Wilcox's big day at the dish. Wilcox was 3-for-3 with a solo homer in the second and a two-RBI single in the sixth that finished the scoring for the day. The Toros Trent Gregory put a lid on Mountain View's four-run, fifth inning with a two-run double to right center. That put the Toros in front briefly for the first time, 5-3.

Desert Vista didn't take long to regain the lead rapping out five hits  and scoring three times in the fifth to go up 6-5. Andres Ramos tied the game with a two-run double and Gavin Fitzpatrick's single brought in Ramos for the Thunder's third and brief final lead.

Brady Gerber, Mountain View's third pitcher, picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Tyler Hilton earned save with a scoreless seventh. Leading Mountain View at the plate with three hits besides Wilcox were Bailey and Joe Cilladi. Fitzpatrick, Justin Spearnock and Brendan McKee had two hits apiece to pace Desert Vista.
