Baseball: Horizon bests Pinnacle behind Isbell's gem

March 18, 2015 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Horizon broke open a pitcher's duel by scoring four runs in the sixth inning and went on to blank Pinnacle, 5-0, in a Division I baseball game at Husky Park.

Horizon senior Chris Isbell tossed a four-hit shutout and got the breathing room needed in the home half of the sixth to turn back Pinnacle. Horizon boosted its record to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in power-ranking games. The Huskies lone power-ranking loss was to Pinnacle, 5-3. Pinnacle slipped to 9-4, 3-4 prg.

Isbell and Pinnacle's Jacob Walker battled each other for five innings with Walker getting out of a couple jams to keep the game tight. Horizon scratched out a run in the first using a double by Matt Kroon and single by George Jennings to take a 1-0 lead.

Walker gave way to Jack Melbostad in the sixth. Melbostad was on the verge of getting out of the sixth with a 1-0 deficit, but Horizon hitters produced clutch, two-out hitting. With two on, Kroon singled to drive in a run. Jennings followed with his second hit -- a two-run triple -- to make it 4-0. Jennings scored a few pitches later on an RBI single by Ben Lewis. Kroon and Jennings finished with two hits apiece to pace a 12-hit Horizon attack. Evan Willaims and Josh McGinley also collected two hits each for Horizon. Jacob Gray had two of Pinnacle's four hits.

Isbell earned his first win of the season. Along with the four hits allowed (all singles), Isbell did not walk a batter and struck out three. Isbell is 1-1 for the season with the loss coming in relief against Pinnacle.

Horizon takes a break from power-ranking games for nearly the next two weeks as they head to North Carolina to represent Arizona in the 2015 National High School Invitational in Cary, N.C. Horizon competes there March 25 through March 28. The Huskies first opponent in the 16-team tourney is March 25 vs. Loyalsock Township, Williamsport, PA.
