Prescott's volleyball team felt pretty good about itself two days ago after reaching the final eight in the gold division at the Westwood Tournament of Champions in Mesa.

Back to the Valley Prescott journeyed Monday night and showed no ill effects from its efforts as the Badgers swept young Arcadia, 25-9, 25-19, 25-11 in a Division II match at Arcadia High.

"I think they were a little tired, but the girls came out focused and did a good job tonight," Prescott coach Shellie Bowman said. "I'm really proud of how they played (last) Friday and Saturday."

Bowman has plenty to be proud about. Prescott ran its overall record to 18-3 and is 5-2 thus far in seven power-ranking matches. Prior to the TOC the Badgers won the Sue Billings Invite. And in the TOC they avenged a three-set sweep at the handsof Liberty by sweeping the Lions.

Junior Raphael Temple was outstanding as she usually is in guiding Monday's victory. Temple does most of the setting, but is an all-around talent. Temple contribued 13 kills, 14 asssists, seven digs and two aces. Senior outsie Sydney Koehler added seven kills and five digs. Sophomore Libero Grace Hendricks had 16 digs.

"Raphael is one of those gifted players," Bowman said. "She has a lot of people around her to help. We're beginning to jell."

Arcadia coach Josh Olshan was quite certain Prescott would be one of the top teams in D-II this year and he got a first hand look on Monday. He didn't like what he saw in the opening set -- not of Prescott, but his own team.

"We came out flat and weren't ready," Olshan said. "We played a tournament this weekend (finishing third at the White Tank Invite). You have to be ready when matches come. There are times you have to play semis and finals in the same day. The first set was disappointing. We played better in the second and third set. But they're a good team. We're young and trying to get better."

Prescott got kills in the first set from six players. The Badgers had four service errors in the opening set giving Arcadia almost half its points. Arcadia (5-6, 1-4) had trouble serving with 10 errors in the first two sets, but played better in all aspects over the final two sets. Prescott simply had too many weapons for Arcadia to make any kind of consistent runs.

Kara Woodard led Arcadia with five kills and Heather Broerman and Jasmin Smith chipped in with four apiece.

Both teams have one more power-ranking matche this week - Arcadia hosts Campo Verde on Tuesday and Prescott is home to Coconino on Thursday. Prescott and Arcaid are playing Friday and Saturday in the annual Goldwater Festival as part of the 32-team field at four westside high schools.
