Bishop Gorman methodically puts away Brophy

Nationally-ranked Bishop Gorman was eager to rectify a loss last year to Mountain Pointe on Friday night in the Sollenberger Classic. The 2014 Gaels did just that even though it wasn't Mountain Pointe they defeated.

Bishop Gorman used a three-prong running game and a couple of big plays from the passing game and kicking game to dominate Brophy Prep, 44-0, in the 9th annual Sollenberger Classic at Fertitta Field on the campus of Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nev.

Bishop Gorman, ranked No. 1 in the nation in a couple polls and highly-ranked in most others, scored a pair of touchdowns in the each of th first and second quarters to build a 27-0 lead as they stymied Brophy at every turn.

The running back trio of Russell Booze, Jon Shumaker and Biaggio Walsh, combined for 180 yards rushing and five of Bishop Gorman's six touchdowns. The Gaels defense was equally impressive, limiting Brophy to 144 yards of offense.

"it was a good start," Bishop Gorman coach Tony Sanchez said. "If I  was going to grade i right now I'd say it was a B-. We missed some plays, had wide open guys and some bad throws.... The defense did a great job. It was probably even better if we didn't have double the personal fouls we had. We'll work to clean up some things."

The teams began the game trading turnovers on the first two plays. Brophy fumbled on the game's first play from scrimmage and the ball was recovered by the Gaels' Nicco Fertitta at Brophy's 43.

Sanchez decided to go away from a scripted start and went for a deep throw on the Gaels first play that was picked off by Brophy's Isaiah Oliver.

After that play the game began for real. Brophy marched from its 38 to Bishop Gorman's 34 where the Broncos were stopped on fourth-and-one.

Bishop Gorman turned around and struck paydirt 66 yards and nine plays later. Mixing in four short passes and five runs, Walsh, a speedy sophomore scored from 1 yard out for a 7-0 lead with 4:15 left in the quarter.

Bishop Gorman made it 14-0 on the final play of the first period by capping a 55-yard drive with Shumaker's first of two TDs -- this one a 6-yarder. Shumaker and Booze handled the carries on that drive and highly-ranked tight end Alize Jones contributed a 28-yard reception to set up the score. Jones added a nifty 80--yard catch-and-run TD on the first play of the third period. Jones ended up with four receptions for 125 yards.

"We had a chance even after the fumble to get momentum and we lost it,"  Molander said of the failed fourth-and-one rush. "They have a tremendous football team. They aren't ranked No. 1 for nothing."

Booze made it 21-0 midway through the second quarter when he plowed four yards up the middle for a touchdown. A 28-yard punt return set up the 22-yard TD drive.

Three plays later Bishop Gorman's Ikem Okeke intercepted a Cade Knox pass setting up Bishop Gorman at Brophy's 35. Shumaker broke free up the middle on the next play for a 35-yard TD run at the 5-minute mark of the second period.

"We like to interchange those three guys (Booze, Shumaker and Walsh)," Sanchez said. "It keeps them fresh, but if they have the hot hand we'll feed them for awhile."  Booze and Shumaker rushed for 45 yards each in the firs half and Walsh had 24. Shumaker finished with 74 yards, Booze 72 yards and Walsh 35.

Bishop Gorman added a 37-yard field gby Gage Wilson on the final play of the first half to make it 30-0. A 69-yard punt return by Tyjon Lindsey put Wilson in position.

"I was proud of our kids," Moldander said. "They didn't quit and we had a lot of younger guys get in to play in the second half  I thought Cade Knox played like a warrior. He played on both sides of the ball all 48 minutes. We need to shore up our protection and get off the ball better. We'll watch film and learn This can help us."

Knox was under duress all night and ended up scrambling often for the 44 yards he netted rushing. Thos yards led the Brophy stat sheet.
