The Red Mountain Lions faced off against the Mountain View Toros in a chippy extra innings game.

The Lions came out on top defeating the Toros 6-5 in the eighth inning. It was all Toros through the first four innings leading Red Mountain 5-0. In the fifth inning Red Mountain erupted to end the inning 5-5. 

Strong pitching closed the game for both teams. JP Hurtado for the Toros earned four strikeouts against 12 at bats. Sophomore Drew Hanen closed the game for the Lions scoreless. Senior Jake Gorrell talks about the confidence Hanen has gained and how he's been able to contribute to the team. 

“Drew has gained a lot of confidence. He’s been able to come in and do relief pitching, he works fast, he executes outs and throws strikes,” said Gorrell. 

Red Mountain was having some difficulty containing base runners and they gave up four stolen bases against Mountain View. 

Chade Wilson singled to left field to score Brandon Dobson in the eighth inning to secure the final run for the Mountain Lions. Wilson had two hits along with two RBIs. Senior and team captain Logan Carney had two RBIs and a stolen base. Carney talks about how the coaches message to the team during their slump. 

“They just told us to stick together and relax and go get it,” said Carney. 

During the game there was a lot of chippines between players and coaches, this should make for an interesting rematch on Monday during senior night at RMHS. A Lion’s player was ejected following a confrontation with the opposing team during the sixth inning. 

Junior and ASU commit Hagen Wright had one hit and one RBI to finish the game. Wright discusses the headspace the team needs to be in for Monday's game.

“We need to mentally be prepared before we go into the game,” said Wright.

Carneys confidence is high going into the last regular season game. He shares his final thoughts.

“We’re going to go into Monday thinking go ball out and go finish the regular season out and get prepped for state playoffs,” said Carney. 

The game on Monday will be the last of the regular season for RMHS as they have their eyes on the playoffs. They’re currently ranked first in the 6A East Valley Section and ranked sixth in the 6A conference.
