Salpointe beat Ironwood Ridge 9-0 Monday at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, named after the late Jim Reffkin, who brought us the modern scoring system and Match Tiebreak. Reffkin passed away last year. It was the first match of the year for the Lancers but the Nighthawks fell to 1-5 on the year.

This year, all section champions will qualify for the state tournament, but if a section champion is ranked outside of the top 16, that team will take part in a play-in match to get in the bracket.

Salpointe hosts Marana (4-0) on Wednesday and things don’t get much easier for the Nighthawks with Catalina Foothills (0-0) visiting Thursday. The Falcons are 132-1 dating back to 2014 with 17 state championships and a current record of nine in row.
