Canyon View held off Kofa 217 to 160 to capture the first team championship in program history. The team took runner-up finishes the last two years heading up to this victory. The Jaguars were led by junior Gabriel Ramirez (120) who won his third championship. The Jaguars had five state champions and 10 placers. Kofa took third place last year.

“Last year we lost by a point and a half and had a point deduction at the end,” Canyon View coach Joseph Ortiz said. “So we lost by a half a point. It was tough. Our guys are self-motivated. We let last year be last year. We looked at it as a learning experience. We had to go through what we went through last year in order to get to this point. We learned a lot about ourselves last year. We weren’t as mentally tough as we were this year. And I think our maturity showed this year in the blood rounds, in the consolation semis, and we went five for five in the finals. So I think having gone through last year, having to grow up, I think it was great. It was a hard learning lesson.”
