No. 1 Flagstaff girls soccer earns OT victory over rival Prescott, 1-0

PRESCOTT — Freshman Elise Welker scored the match winner with a header off a corner kick from Nataly Arangure to give No. 1-ranked Flagstaff a 1-0 victory over No. 3 Prescott in an overtime thriller Tuesday night.

“Tonight was a tough battle between two great teams,” Flagstaff head coach Savannah Berry said.

It is the sixth straight victory for the Eagles (11-1, 4-0 4A Grand Canyon), which saw Kate Bouck take five shots on goal while Aspen McCallie recorded three saves between the posts.

Prescott (9-1, 3-1 4A Grand Canyon) had previously won nine straight.

4A BOYS HOOPS: #6 PRESCOTT 75, MINGUS 28

PRESCOTT — Uriah Tenette scored 28 points and was 8 for 9 from the free-throw line to lead No. 6 Prescott past Mingus 75-28, claiming the Grand Canyon region title Wednesday night.

The Badgers (21-3, 11-0 4A Grand Canyon) have won 12 straight, and continue to stay in contention for the Open State Tournament in addition to the 4A state playoffs.

Zane Gaul chipped in with 16 points for Prescott, which led 39-18 at the half and used a 30-6 run in the third quarter to put the game away for good.

The Badgers have two games remaining on the regular season schedule, the first a road trip at Coronado on Feb. 1, and the finale at home against Flagstaff on Feb. 8.

3A BOYS HOOPS: #4 HOLBROOK 75, #11 SHOW LOW 51

SHOW LOW — Tyler Tapaha scored 27 points, Xavier Brown and Jaron Becenti each had 15 and No. 4-ranked Holbrook outscored Show Low 17-9 in the fourth quarter for a 75-51 win Tuesday night.

Holbrook (15-7, 7-2 3A East) added another win Wednesday night against Payson, 54-45, and have now won three straight.

The Roadrunners hit 15 3-pointers on the evening.

Becenti added seven rebounds to his scoring total, while Tapaha had five assists and four steals.

Holbrook is scheduled to play at Winslow on Feb. 2, then end the regular season at home against Snowflake on Feb. 7. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

2A NORTH BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNEY

ST. JOHNS — The 2A North Region Boys Basketball Tournament is underway with No. 1 Hopi set to face No. 4 Pinon and No. 3 St. Johns will play No. 2 Round Valley in the tournament semifinals Friday night.

No. 1-seeded Hopi received a bye and will play a Pinon club that opened the tournament with a 73-55 win over Many Farms on Wednesday night.

St. Johns beat Valley 69-53, while Round Valley pummeled No. 7-seeded Greyhills, 82-12.

Round Valley and St. Johns lock horns at 3 p.m. while Hopi-Pinon is slated for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

The tournament is hosted by St. Johns High School, with $5 admission for tickets and $8 all-day passes available.

The 2A North region title game is set for Saturday at 5 p.m.

2A NORTH GIRLS TOURNEY

ST. JOHNS — Hosted by St. Johns High School, the 2A North Region Girls Basketball Tournament is scheduled for two semifinal games Friday night featuring a St. Johns-Many Farms matchup, and a Round Valley-Valley contest for the chance to play for a title Saturday.

On Wednesday night, Many Farms beat Pinon 48-43, while Valley beat Hopi 53-36. Round Valley advanced by beating Greyhills 77-0, and St. Johns received a bye as the No. 1 seed.

Tipoff for the first semifinal game featuring Round Valley and Valley is 4:30 p.m., while the 7:30 p.m. game is St. Johns and Many Farms.

The championship is scheduled for 7 p.m.
