Notre Dame and Chaparral didn’t budge defensively.

Their rivalry match boiled down to one opportunity. Paxton Bock got the chance, and she buried it.

Notre Dame’s ball-controlling whiz scored the lone goal in Tuesday’s highly anticipated soccer match. There was a lot at stake between the rivals: First place in their region. A potential No. 1 seed in the 5A state tournament. Scottsdale regular season bragging rights.

Bock, for the second year in a row, made sure her team walked off with the spoils. She scored twice in last year’s victory against Chaparral.

This time, at Notre Dame’s Bemis Field, the SMU commit found herself with the ball in the 61st minute. From the right side of the 18-yard box, Bock wisely went high to get the ball past the outstretched arms of the goalkeeper to finally break the scoreless tie.

“When we first came out we were a little bit frantic,” Bock said. “But in the second half, during our halftime talk, we talked about how we needed to settle down and just play our game.”

Chaparral was the aggressor in the outset, but Notre Dame’s defense kept its opponent at bay.

Notre Dame’s defense has not allowed a goal in its last five matches, and its offense has scored 23 goals in that span for its 10-4-1, 2-0 squad.

“I’d like to give a shoutout to all of my players,” Notre Dame coach Michael Varela said. “They know what it takes to come out and compete in every match.”

Chaparral (9-4-2, 1-1) may have lost the battle, but it’s been here before.

Despite losing to Notre Dame in the regular season last season, Chaparral wound up winning a title for the eighth time in 29 seasons.

Can Chaparral do it again this season?

“I have no idea,” said one of Arizona’s coaching greats, the very humble and driven Robyn Carlson. “We’ll just look at this game and learn from it. So that way we can take what we’ve learned into our next game.”
