PRESCOTT VALLEY — Mason Hunt scored 20 points, Mauricio Holguin added 17 on four 3-pointers and Bradshaw Mountain held off Greenway 49-42 on Friday night.

It is the second straight win in as many nights for a Bears (6-2, 0-0 4A Grand Canyon) club that made the final four a season ago, and have aspirations to hoist a state championship trophy come February.

But, according to coach Cain Atkinson, his club won’t achieve that goal if they don’t start playing better basketball than what fans saw Friday night.

“To be honest with you, I’m pissed. I thought we were selfish. The defensive end of the floor didn’t matter. We didn’t want to move the ball. We talked about it at halftime, the ball had to move, it couldn’t stick. We are very predictable if that’s all we do is stick,” a fiery Atkinson said after the game.

“We’re one dimensional. We’re gonna look to Mason [Hunt], look to Mason, look to Mason … I’m pissed.”

Atkinson credited Greenway on a hard fought game, including Razel Johnson’s effort as he poured in 24 points as the Bears had no answer for him defensively at times.

“All respect to coach [Howard] Mueller. He does a great job. His kids played hard, No. 30 [Johnson] did a heck of a job,” Atkinson said. “We weren’t ready to play, like I said, we need to get a whole lot better. We were horrible tonight.”

Johnson said the Demons (0-2, 0-0 4A Skyline), which went 2-20 a season ago, were a smaller club trying to use their speed as an advantage, but it didn’t work out in the end.

“We had a good effort, we just couldn’t come out with the win,” Johnson said.

Bradshaw Mountain led 23-20 at the half, but Greenway’s Gauge Rinehart hit a 3 to cap a 10-4 Demons run and tie the game at 30-30 with 4:14 left in the third quarter.

Later in the fourth quarter, Johnson drove down the middle of the lane for a bucket to cut the Bears’ lead to 47-42 with 3:12 left to play, but were unable to overcome the deficit in the end.

Hunt, a 6-foot-7 forward averaging 25.6 points per game this season, felt his club should have handled Greenway a bit better than they showed Friday night.

“They came out and played hard. We would get an eight-to-10-point lead, then take the foot off the gas. We have to get better at capitalizing on those opportunities to burry a team,” Hunt said. “All gas no brakes.”
