The Gregory School opened up the year with an 87-32 victory over San Miguel Thursday night in the second half of a double-header where the girl’s team defeated San Miguel 53-8 in the first game. The boys led 21-15 after the first quarter but the team went out to a 26-4 run in the second quarter to take command of the game from there with freshman sensation Razin Smith leading all scorers with 26 points including an emphatic dunk to introduce himself to the high school scene. The Hawks went on to win 87-32. At 6-foot-5, Smith will be sure to gain a lot of attention with the Hawks.

The Gregory School won back-to-back 1A state championships in 2018 and 2019 under head coach Craig Everson and the team looks primed to contend again this year after making it to the quarterfinal round last year. Junior David El added 17 points in the win over the 3A Vipers at home Thursday night. Bodhi Marks scored 10 and Ben Head, Justus Turner and Kevin Hendershott scored seven points each.

For the Vipers, shooter Rene Sosa led the team with 13 points, Brndon Carranza scored 11 and Adrian Ranseyer added six. The Vipers had a difficult season last year when the team was moved up from the 2A Conference to the 3A with only one victory but it’s a young program.

San Miguel (0-1) will host Tombstone (0-0) on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets open up their season at Duncan (0-0) Friday night and The Gregory School (1-0) will host Hayden (0-0) Friday night.
