Bring on Millennium.

Heading into Thursday’s 5A state quarterfinal game, Canyon View’s coaches didn’t want their players looking ahead. By all indications, during the 41-0 home shutout over Mesquite, that didn’t happen Thursday night.

The state’s highest scoring team once again kept the scoreboard operator busy. Canyon View can now completely focus on Millennium, its sister school and opponent in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Quarterback Katelyn Jewell and Nyjah Green set the tone early for the Jaguars.

On her first play from scrimmage, Jewell threw her 50th touchdown pass of the year. Green caught the pass in front of a defender and then sprinted toward the end zone during the 80-yard scoring play.

But the elusive Green was just warming up. The senior also outran defenders down the sideline in the third quarter after receiving a short pass from Jewell for a 65-yard touchdown.

That pushed the lead to 28-0 against a Mesquite team that moved the ball at times but just couldn’t find the end zone.

“They did a phenomenal job,” said Mesquite coach Chad Montgomery about his team’s inaugural flag season. “A lot of the players didn’t have much experience, but they learned, improved, and a 10-win season is phenomenal. It’s a good stepping stone for us.”

Sophomore receiver Mariah Willis and junior quarterback Jordyn Flores, who broke free a couple of times, are just two of the young, talented players that helped Mesquite set its flag foundation.

11-1 Canyon View has not lost since its season opener and has shutout eight opponents. Up next is a Millennium squad Canyon View defeated 21-14 on Oct. 4 to help it win a region title.

“It’s amazing,” said Green about reaching the state semifinals. “We have a lot of athletes, so I’m happy that we get to use all of them and get all of the spotlight now.”
