Suspended-game outcomes loom large in D-I BB playoff chase

A couple of suspended Division I baseball games may have an effect on the already tightly-contested playoff race in the sport.

On Tuesday, playoff contenders Horizon and Desert Mountain played to a 10-10 tie when darkness intervened to stop their game at Desert Mountain. Desert Mountain is fighting for a first-round bye; Horizon for a playoff spot..

Under normal circumstances the teams could finish the game today, but Horizon has a scheduled game at Chaparral. Desert Mountain is finished with its games other than the tie with Horizon.

Earlier this month, Gila Ridge and Cibola had their April 13 contest suspended by darkness and are supposed to resume it today (Wednesday), weather permitting. A possibility of rain exists Wednesday in Yuma. The teams are tied, 5-5, in the 10th inning. Cibola (11-6-1 power-point games) is jockeying for playoff position as well.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association issued a statement Wednesday that said weather delayed or suspended games have until 7 p.m. Thursday (April 26) to be completed and reported to be included in the power-rankings. Any suspended tie games that can't be finished by the Thursday deadline will go down as ties. The  teams involved will split the power points.

Gila Ridge and Cibola are completing their 5-5 tie game today (April 25) at 4 p.m. at Cibola. Horizon (9-7-1 ppg) will travel to Desert Mountain (13-4-1 ppg) on Thursday (April 26) to complete their 10-10 tie at 4 p.m.
