Russell, Jordan, Whitcomb, Grieshaber & Scheer Named Max Preps/NFCA National H.S. Players of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior pitcher/outfielder Haley Russell (Keshequa (Nunda, N.Y.) H.S.), sophomore McKenzi Jordan (Southmont (Crawfordsville, Ind.) H.S.), senior pitcher/infielder Chelsea Whitcomb (Cosby (Midlothian, Va.) H.S.), senior Brynn Grieshaber (Elkhart (Elkhart, Kan.) H.S.) and senior Elli Scheer (Packinghouse Christian Academy (Redlands, Calif.)) have been tabbed as the MaxPreps/NFCA National High School Players of the Week for games played over May 12-18.

East Region

Russell posted a 4-0 mark for the Indians with a 0.33 ERA and 21 strikeouts over 21 innings of work, while batting .333 overall with 11 runs scored, a double, seven steals and a pair of RBIs. During a 20-2 rout of York (N.Y.), she was 2-for-5 at the dish with four tallies and tossed three innings of no-hit ball. She struck out a season-high 11 during a complete-game, 5-1 triumph over Perry (N.Y.). Overall for 2014, she is 12-1 from the circle with a 1.58 ERA and 84 K's over 75.1 innings, while batting .345 with eight RBIs.

North Region


Jordan was remarkable for the Mounties last week, hitting .652 (15-for-23) with 14 runs scored, four doubles, a triple, five HR's and 16 RBIs, while going 4-1 in the circle with 52 K's over 30 innings of effort. She managed at least two hits in each of Southmont's six contests and struck out at least 12 batters in three of her pitching appearances. For the year she is hitting .512 with 25 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs to go along with a 12-6 record, a 2.02 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 111 frames.

South Region

Whitcomb put up a 3-0 mark for the Titans with a 0.47 ERA, a no-hitter and 24 strikeouts over 15 innings, while batting .500 (4-for-8) with five tallies, two doubles, two HR's and five RBIs. Her finest performance came during a 15-0 rout of Bird (Va.) as she went 2-for-4 at the dish with two HR's and five RBIs, while striking out 13 in a no-hit effort. Whitcomb maintains a perfect 16-0 yearly record with a 0.49 ERA and 161 K's over 85 innings and is at .500 at the dish with 14 extra-base hits and 16 RBIs.

South Central Region


Grieshaber was a force for the Wildcats, nearly perfect at 11-for-12 at the dish (.917) with six runs, four walks, eight stolen bases, four doubles and eight RBIs. She managed to reach safely in 15 of 16 total plate appearances over four match-ups, including a perfect 4-for-4 effort with a double and three RBIs during a 22-7 rout of Sublette (Kan.). Thus far in 2014, Grieshaber is hitting at a .630 clip with 10 two-baggers, 25 thefts and 21 RBIs.

West Region

During the Bears' 4-0 week, Scheer batted 10-for-13 (.769) with six walks, two doubles, four steals, a HR and 16 RBIs, while also going 3-0 in the circle with five K's. She had a pair of four-hit efforts, including a 4-for-4, two-double, seven-RBI performance during a romp over Palm Valley (Calif.). For the year Scheer is hitting at a .711 clip with 10 extra-base hits and 33 RBIs.

During the fall campaign, just a single player will be selected representing all participating regions.
