It may seem obvious that passing yards per game has climbed over the years with the shift to the popular spread offense. But by how much? And does that mean rushing yards and rushing attempts have dipped?

The MaxPreps stats database now dates back 10 years. Coaches from across the country began entering stats back in 2004, and each year more and more coaches utilize MaxPreps.

In 2004, Chase Daniel of Carroll (Southlake, Texas) threw for 4,617 yards and 49 touchdowns in 16 games. His total yards ranked third in the nation and his total touchdowns ranked fourth. Fast forward 10 years later to 2013, and seven players threw for more yards in as many as three fewer games. In 14 games, Grant Sherman of Kenton (Ohio) threw for 5,920 yards and 65 scores, while Will Grier from Davidson Day (N.C.) connected on 71 touchdown passes.

A minimum of eight games of stats must have been entered in order to be counted toward the national average. All stats came via the coach or someone he/she assigned to enter stats. Data was gathered from a minimum of 800 schools to as much as 5,700 total schools.
