Team Arizona finishes fifth at Junior Sunbelt Tournament

Team Arizona wrapped up its 10-game, one-week stay in the heartland on Wednesday (June 11) by defeating Team Mississippi, 8-5, to earn fifth place at the 2014 Junior Sunbelt Baseball Classic in McAlester, Okla.

Canyon del Oro's Gabe Benavites ripped a two-run single in the bottom of the third to break a 4-4 tie and help send Arizona on to victory. Arizona tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth, scoring on a balk and a double by Salpointe's Donnie Sands. Arizona cranked out 14 hits in all with five players collecting two hits apiece -- Perry's Austin Bull, Fountain Hills Devin Foyle, Horizon's Matt Kroon, Millennium's Jared McDonald and Sands. Chaparral's Sam Messina joined Benavites with two RBI. Bull and Kroon each had an RBI.

Chandler's Hayden Durkiewicz earned the win pitching the middle 2 1/3 innings and allowing an unearned run. Pinnacle's Blake Flint tossed two perfect innings to close it out. Arizona finished with a 6-4 record and defeated Mississippi twice on the final day.

Kroon had an outstanding tournament going 12-for 29 (.414) with three homers and 11 RBI. Foyle and Bull both were 7-for-17 (.412). Foyle had a home run and seven RBI.
