D-I top-10 baseball teams scuffle two weeks before playoffs

It's a good thing for the top-10 teams in last week's Division I baseball power rankings the playoffs weren't last week.

Eight of the 10 schools in those spots lost at least once. And the losses weren't confined to one another. Teams in the second ten even the third and fourth 10 picked off a top team or two.

Here's how it went for the top 10 -- No. 1 Hamilton bowed to Tolleson, 3-2. No. 2 Chaparral lost to Mountain Ridge. No. 3 Mountain Pointe dropped games to Mesquite and Chandler on the heels of losing a tight one April 11 to Hamilton. No. 4 Desert Ridge bowed to Basha and  hard-charging Gilbert. No. 5 Desert Vista lost a 5-0 lead over Hamilton and lost the game, 13-5. No. 6 Horizon fell to suddenly hot Mesa Mountain View. No. 7 Mesquite lost two -- Highland and Mesa Mtn. View. No. 8 Highland lost to Hamilton and Mountain Pointe. No. 9 Sandra Day O'Connor was the only top-10 team to play and not lose. No. 10 Brophy didn't play last week due to its week off for Easter.

This is not to say those aforementioned top-10 are headed downhill for the duration, but it does signal it's time for teams to be at their best -- either to qualify for state or maintain/if not improve their position. It also illustrates the fine line that exists in baseball (softball as well), unlike football and basketball for the most part, on any given day a 20-win team can fall to a team well-under .500.
