Girls hoops: Campo Verde, Desert Vista claim holiday titles

Campo Verde's' girls basketball team ended a four-game run over the weekend by winning the FIBA bracket of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego, CA.

Campo Verde knocked off Del Norte, 49-40, in the title game of its bracket. Campo Verde breezed to three pool-play wins defeating Jasper Place, Canada 68-31, Canyon Crest (CA) 73-36 and Steele Canyon (CA), 72-35.  

Guard Cori Ramos tallied 24 points to pace the title game triumph. Ramos was named to the all-tournament team and teammate Stephanie Orji  was awarded tournament MVP honors. Campo Verde improved its record to 11-4.

In the NAIA bracket at SoCal, Red Mountain fiinished runner-up, bowing to San Marcos, CA, 57-36, in that division's final. Red Mountain posted a 2-2 mark in the tournament and is 10-6 overall.

Desert Vista and Seton Catholic represented the East Valley well in the Northwest Desert Classic played at Canyon del Oro and Pusch Ridge high schools in Tucson. Both went 4-0 before meeting in the title game, won by Desert Vista, 50-42. Desert Vista is 9-5 and Seton 13-2.

HIghland posted a 4-1 mark at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic at Centennial High (NV). Highland closed tournament play with a 67-40 win over Woodbridge (CA). Rebecca Rudd led Highland with 16 points and Olivia Lucero added 11 points. Rudd averaged 12 points a game in the Hawks' five games. Highland is 16-2 on the season.
