Following Allen will be challenge for young Desert Mtn. QB

In College Station, Texas, the followers of Texas A&M football are talking about A&M.

That would be Allen & Manziel, and whether freshman quarterback Kyle Allen will be able to replace the legendary Johnny Manziel after he was taken by the Cleveland Browns in the first round of the National Football League draft.

Someone has to replace Manziel, and it might as well be Allen, a product of Scottsdale Desert Mountain High. And A&M’s playing surface already is named Kyle Field.

Similar to the Manziel replacement scenario is the Allen replacement situation at Desert Mountain. Allen passed for 8,201 yards and 86 touchdowns in three varsity seasons for the Wolves, and now, someone else will have to step in and follow in his footsteps.

That someone else would be Austin Nuessle, a sophomore-to-be who spent time on the varsity roster as a freshman in 2013.

Nuessle already stands about 6-feet-3 and weighs about 170 pounds.

After watching him in summer-passing competition at Phoenix Brophy Prep (Tuesday nights through the end of June), he appears as if he could develop into a reliable physical presence and a good leader for head coach Tony Tabor and his staff.

Nuessle has a different type of release, not really over the top. His arm drops into a lower slot and he sort of “pushes’’ the ball, for lack of a better explanation. But you know what? The ball goes exactly where he wants it to go most of the time and that’s the main thing.

He did not move around in the pocket much, but the opportunities for that will be different once practice and games start for real toward the end of August.

The competition at Brophy is Desert Mountain’s second overall of the summer. According to Tabor, the team had a smaller get-together earlier at its home field along with Scottsdale Saguaro, Glendale Mountain Ridge and Phoenix Paradise Valley.

Tabor said the Wolves are young, “but we are getting better each week. We are starting to mature.’’

As for his quarterback, Tabor was asked whether there is any pressure on him, as the team goes post-Allen and post-Mark Andrews, the team’s former wide receiver who will begin his freshman year at Oklahoma this fall.

“There maybe is a little pressure, but it’s a brand-new team, pretty much brand-new everything. I think he will do fine,’’ Tabor said.
