Camp Verde girls play their game against Joy Christian

December 17, 2012 by Don Ketchum, AZPreps365

There is no question what type of game you are going to get from the Mark Showers-coached girls basketball team from Camp Verde High.

The players are fundamentally sound. Pass and cut. Set screens. Rotate the ball. Get good position on defense.

And if an opponent is off its game just one little bit, it can spend most of its time trying to catch up and rarely is it able to pull even.

That was the framework of Monday night’s game at Glendale Joy Christian.

Division III Camp Verde made its trip to the Valley worthwhile, leading by as many as 21 points before settling for a 55-45 victory over its Division IV hosts.

“We needed to get a win. We know Joy Christian is always tough,’’ Showers said.

Because his players generally are about the same size, they appear to be interchangeable at any location on the floor.

“If we can keep all of our kids on the floor, we’re fine. We just need to manage our fouls,’’ Showers said.

Camp Verde (7-2) spread the wealth on offense, with eight players getting into the scoring column. Joy Christian (8-3), meanwhile, had just four players put points on the board.

Amanda Showers led Camp Verde with 14 points and Donnie Buss had 13. Maddy Showers connected on three 3-pointers.

Victoria Morin topped Joy Christian with 17 points and Mariah Kempf had 12.

“This game was a big boost for us. It does give us some momentum going into our tournament, which is right after Christmas,’’ Showers said.

“We’re a team that can do some nice things, but we have to avoid doing dumb things.’’

Camp Verde’s girls will host the Yvonne Johnson Memorial on Dec. 28-29.

Participating teams will be Ash Fork, Camp Verde, Chino Valley, Joy Christian, Phoenix Northwest Christian, Parker, Red Mesa, Sedona Red Rock, Seligman, Peoria Sunrise Mountain, Sahuarita Walden Grove and Williams.
