Queen Creek defense stands out in rout of Williams FieldOct 26, 2012
Queen Creek's defense was sliced up pretty good by Williams Field on the opening series of Friday's battle of Division III unbeatens at Queen Creek High School.
Williams Field methodically marched from its 20 to the Queen Creek 10, but an interception in the end zone started a gradual avalanche that buried the visiting Black Hawks.
That opening drive interception led to Queen Creek's first touchdown and the Bulldogs went on to dominate their neighbors to the northeast with a 49-6 thumping.
Queen Creek quarterback Carson Jones scored on two short runs and tossed two touchdown passes and junior running back Matt Guida (198 yards rushing on 16 carries) came up with big gainers to key a couple scoring drives. Queen Creek finishes the regular season 10-0 and in what was supposed to be their toughest test to date, well, they passed with flying colors. Williams Field, which barely escaped with a win over Poston Butte last week to stay unscathed at 9-0, heads to postseason with a bit of a battered pysche.
Queen Creek entered Friday's game as the No. 3 seed in Division III and Williams Field was at No. 4. Both will host playoff games next week. The final D-III and all the D-I through D-V football pairings will be announced by the AIA Saturday morning at 9.
Williams Field's start seemed to take Queen Creek aback as Black Hawks running back Sean Schweichler rushed for 42 yards on the opening drive and quarterback Jeddediah Fagg completed his first four passes for 33 yards. With a second-and-7 at the Queen Creek 10, Queen Creek defensive back Tyler Johnson jump-started the hosts. He picked off an erant throw by Fagg and returned in from his end zone to the Queen Creek 37. This after Williams Field had taken nearly 6 1/2 minutes off the clock.
It took Queen Creek less than three minutes to march 67 yards to paydirt with fullback David Genantonio bulling into the end zone form 3 yards out with 2:50 left in the first period.
Williams Field was able to answer the momentum shift, using a 56-yard completion from Fagg to Jordan Johnson to key a seven-play, 92-yard scoring drive. Schweichler did the honors on a 3-yard run. Williams Field didn't tie the game as the extra point sailed wide left with 21 seconds left in the period.
The rest of the half belonged to Queen Creek and its defense began resembling the unit that allowed just 35 points in the first nine game. After surrendering 176 yards of offense in the first quarter, Queen Creek turned things around abruptly. Williams Field had two three-and-outs and finished the second period with minus-5 yards. Queen Creek scored on its next two possessions -- the second TD fueled by a 42-yard run by Guida. Backfield mate Marcus Still took over for Guida on the next drive. He piled up 33 yards rushing and that march ended with another 1-yard TD run by Jones. Queen Creek took a 21-6 lead at the half.
Queen Creek improved the lead to 28-6 on its first possession of the second half marching 80 yards in seven plays. Guida rambled 46 yards on the first play from scrimmage of the half. Jones capped the drive with the first of two TD passes to wide out Gabe Vasquez.
Williams Field saw its last flicker of hope vanish early in the fourth quarter. After a 29-yard completion from Fagg to Jordan Johnson gave Williams Field a first-and-goal at the Queen Creek 1, the Bulldogs defense denied the Black Hawks again. Schweichler was tackled for a 3-yard loss and two incomplete passes turned the ball over on downs. A TD could have pulled Williams Field within two scores with a quarter to play.
Instead Queen Creek blazed its way to Williams Field's end zone with a 96-yard, five-play drive. Guida set up his own 7-yard TD run with a dazzling 56-yard run. With 8:52 to play, it was 35-6 Queen Creek. Game over.
Schweichler finished with 117 yards rushing on 20 carries. Jones completed 10-of-16 passes fro 182 yards. Queen Creek did not turn the ball over while Williams Field threw three interceptions.
