Mesquite's girls basketball team was Arizona's last hope Saturday to advance to a bracket title game at the Nike TOC this year. Thanks to some stingy defense from unbeaten Brea Olinda, there will be no Arizona team in Monday's championship matchups.

A strong final five minutes of the third period and five more to begin the fourth sent Mesquite to a 52-39 defeat at the hands of Brea Olinda, Calif., at Perry High School.

Brea Olinda (8-0) moves on to the John Anderson bracket title game on Monday and faces Windward, Calif., at  2:20 at Hamilton High School. Mesquite finished the 2014 portion of its 2014-2015 schedule with a 10-5 record. Both teams featured balanced scoring. Brea Olinda got 13 points off the bench from Shaylissa Jarret and plenty from starters Reili Richardson (12), Tyiona Watkins (10), Krislyn Marsh (9) and Sierra Bononi (7). Mesquite's three starting freshmen -- Shaylee Gonzales, Lindsey VanAllen and Lonnae Johnson tallied 12, 10 and eight points, respectively.

Mesquite's best interval came in the game's first three minutes when it strung together nine consecutive points for a 9-4 lead. Junior Izzy Spruit, who finished with eight points, sank a pair of threes to highlight Mesquite's good start. By quarter's end Brea Olinda returned the favor with a 14-3 run that put it ahead to stay, 18-12. Brea Olinda extended the lead to 26-19 at halftime.

Mesquite tried some full court zone pressure to begin the second half and managed to pull within 28-26 with 5:40 left in the third period. Over the next 10 minutes Brea Olinda ended Mesquite's hopes of a trip to the final by outscoring the it 22-5.

Mesquite, which thrives on perimeter shooting, made only five threes on Saturday and shot a combined 14-of-53 from the field (26 percent). Mesquite  made it to the free-throw line 20 times, but made only six to round out a tough shooting day. Mesquite got good penetration to offset its perimeter-shooting woes, but its offense in the half court didn't produce many layups. Brea Olinda blocked or knocked away at least six shot attempts in the lane.

Arizona teams enjoyed their best day of the tournament on Saturday, posting a 10-9 record. Their combined record through three days is 23-34.
