Coyote Classic Soccer: Highland girls, Chandler boys win titles

Teams displaying the most balance ruled the day Saturday in the semis and finals of the 2nd annual Coyote Soccer Classic at Campo Verde High School.

The teams who showed they could score and limit the opposition's scoring ended up champions as Highland prevailed for the girls crown and Chandler High captured the boys title.

Highland's girls were the only team -- boys or girls -- to finish the tournament unbeaten and untied. The Lady Hawks were 5-0 and capped their week of tourney play with a 1-0 victory over last year's Division I runner-up Perry in the championship match. Senior Bri Hatch tallied the title-game winner from about 20 yards out in the 31st minute. Hatch's defender jumped the ball and Hatch got free long enought for a clean shot she calmly netted.

Highland had more chances in the match, but Perry had a couple late it couldn't finish. Highland coach Andy Barber was pleased with the effort his team put forth on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and twice on Saturday. Highland scored 15 goals in its five matches and allowed just two.

"It's good to start out the season playing well," Barber said. " But there shouldn't be a rush to judgement over this. We went out, played like we can and took care of business. We did the same thing last year and the season didn't end well. We're more aware this year of what our goal is."

Highland's offense was managed by its forwards -- Hatch and juniors Carley Cope and Torey Rinsem. They dominated goal scoring for the week. Senior keeper Amanda Witherow posted four shutouts and gave up only the two goals Gilbert posted in the Highland's 4-2 semfinal win to open play on Saturday..

"Amanda had a good week," Barber said. "She got help from our backline that played well. Amanda is the heart and soul of our defense."

Perry''s week wasn't bad either. The Lady Pumas scored nine goals and allowed only two. They reached the final by shutting out Basha, 2-0, in the other semi.

In the boys competition, Chandler, which qualified as the wild-card team along with the three pool winners, knocked off host Campo Verde for the championship with a 2-0 triumph. It was the Wolves' first invitational title in at least the past decade or more. Chandler scored its goals two minutes apart early in the second half. The first was by Carter Rumsey and the second by Jesus Cortez.

Chandler advanced earlier in the day with a 2-1 win over Highland. The Wolves scored the winning goal in that one on what coach Sasha Hunter called a Hail Mary. Senior Don Tchilao tallied off a header received from Andrew Layton with one second left to play. Campo Verde advanced in not quite as dramatic fashion. The Coyotes played Desert Vista to a 0-0 draw after regulation and two overtimes and won out in PKs, 4-2.

A save by Campo Verde keeper Briley Guarneri on Desert Vista's third PK attempt kept Campo Verde with a 3-2 advantage. Campo Verde converted its first four PKs (Jonathan Zimmerman, Luke Gleadle, Evan Johnson and Robert Delci) and the match ended when Desert Vista's fourth PK attempt sailed over the cross bar.

Campo Verde and Chandler were in the same pool and met in their second match of pool play Monday when they played to a 0-0 tie. A handful of outstanding saved by Briley Guarneri that night allowed the Campo Verde to escape with a tie.

In Saturday night's championship match, Campo Verde, which hadn't given up a goal in the tournament in its first four matches (covering 340 minutes) kept Chandler scorelessuntil the 50th minute. A Tchilao cross was headed in by Carter Rumsey at that juncture. Two minutes later Chandler was awarded a free kick from 25 yards out on the left side of the box. Tchalio and Cortez were both prepared to kick. Tchalio approached the ball first, but backed away. Cortez then advanced and lined home the shot past Campo keeper Justin Zimmerman.

"We were hungry for this one," Hunter said. "We had about 20 shots on goal when we played the other night and their keeper was great and kept us from a couple. This is a good start for us."

Chandler has momentum heading to its next match, a power-ranking match on Tuesday with rival Hamilton. Chandler scored 12 goals and allowed one in finishing 4-0-1 in the tournament.

Campo Verde coach Drew Guarneri opted to play most of his subs in the title match. Including the title game, Campo played three matches in a 24-hour period, including the shootout in Saturday's semifinals.

"We were pretty much spent (after the semis)," Guarneri said. "We have a match that counts on Monday with McClintock and I felt we needed to stretch out our lineup. I thought our guys played really well in the last one. Gave a great effort."
