Football stole the spotlight for five division championship games over the Thanksgiving weekend, but basketball didn't wait to take off. Which teams got off to good starts? Many of the familiar.

In the boys ranks, Corona del Sol, minus freshmen center Marvin Bagley III, won the 2nd annual Hoophall West by defeating Chinle, Pinnacle and Shadow Mountain in an eight-team bracket of squads. Corona, the three-time defending Division I champs, topped defending D-II champ Shadow Mountain in the final. Corona got a scare in the semis from who else -- Pinnacle -- in a narrow, semifinal victory. Corona will be as entertaining as ever this season with senior Dane Kuiper, sophomore Alex Barcello and senior Cassius Peat. When Bagley returns. expected by the middle of this month,  the Aztecs will be even more stout and difficult to defend.

Over at Paradise Valley High, Perry guard Markus Howard picked up where he left off last year leading the Pumas to the Paradise Valley Invitational title with a 66-60 win over Paradise Valley in the championship game. Howard, a sophomore, averaged 29.5 points a game in the Pumas' 4-0 start. Backcourt mate Coby de LaVeaga averaged 17.5 points as Perry swept  North Canyon, Deer Valley, Cesar Chavez and PV. de Laveaga came to the rescue in the championship game with 28 points, including five 3s that helped offset Howard's battle with foul trouble in the contest. Howard fouled out and finished with a season-low 16 points.

In the dual-hosted Salpointe Tip-Off Classic (Salpionte and Chandler High hosts), Salpointe was the venue for Saturday night's final with Central High taking down local hopeful Cholla, 72-61, in the final. Central posted a 5-0 record and got 24 points in the title game from Obi Meswa. The Bobcats were led in the tournament by post Famoun Miller, who tallied 15 points in the final and was the tournament MVP.

At Mesa High's 8-team, Fear the Hop Invite, the host Jackrabbits took home the title beating Mesa neighbor Red Mountain, 53-41. Mesa is 4-0 with wins over Agua Fria, Hamilton, Carl Hayden and Red Mountain.

A pair of 16-team girls tournaments in the Valley stocked with many of the top teams in D-I and D-II finished up last Friday and Saturday. The Lady Padres Tip-Off Classic at Marcos de Niza saw a hungry Millennium upend defending D-I champ Desert Vista in the championship game, 81-76. Millennium returns most of its lineup from last year's D-I quarterfinal finish. The leader, 5-foot-5 point guard Raine Perez, tallied 24 points in the final. Desert Vista returns the state's top post player in Cal-bound Kristine Anigwe and ASU-bound Sabrina Haines. Millennium's victory avenged a 70-44 thumping in the 2013 Padres Tipoff Classic title game.

At Highland's annual Thanksgiving tournanment, co-hosted by Mesquite HS, Dobson defeated Mountain Pointe for the championship, 70-47. Mountain Pointe fell behind early, but was within 10 after three periods. Dobson used a 25-12 edge in the final period to put away the Pride. Dobson is a senior-laden team and had three players earn all-tournament honors -- Dyesha Stahley, Alexis Todd and Kayla Clark. Stahley helped stave off Seton with a 26-point effort and Todd averaged a little more than 20 points a game during the tournament. Mountain Pointe was led by Tilasha Okey, who sank six threes vs. Dobson to keep the Pride going for three quarters.
