Division III Football Championship: No. 1 Saguaro vs. No. 2 Williams Field

November 27, 2014 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365

The numbers are impressive. Scottsdale Saguaro (13-0) has outscored their opponents 671 to 164 this year or roughly 52-13 per game. That scoring total includes a 42-7 victory over their Division III state championship opponent Gilbert Williams Field (12-1).

Dating back to last year, Jason Mohns is currently coaching a 26-game win streak that includes a 47-25 state championship over Queen Creek.

Simply, the Sabercats are on a roll. A big role.

Some say it all begins with quarterback Kare' Lyles. The junior has thrown for 3,150 yards and 38 touchdowns. Quite impressive considering he was waiting in the wings while Cal freshman Luke Rubenzer collected over 4,200 yards last year.

Then there's senior running back Christian Kirk with his 1,481 yards and 22 TDs or the other senior back Kamron Johnson and his 1,291 yards and 20 TDs. If you stop those two then you will have to cover junior receiver Byron Murphy and his 1,251 yards and 12 TDs.

If you did happen to stop Kirk at the line then look for him to be down field as he also collected 1,125 yards receiving along with 17 more TDs. If you are counting, the total offensive damage is over 6,700 yards.

Williams Field came in ranked second for a reason. Like Saguaro, The Black Hawks have an impressive scoring margin over their opponents this year, 586 to 157 or an average game margin of 45-12.

Braedyn Bushman has rushed for over 2,300 yards with 30 touchdowns to his credit. The senior gained 119 yards against Saguaro while averaging six yards a carry. Junior QB Quarterback Weston Murphy led Williams Field to a dominating 45-3 win over No. Tempe in the semifinal round.

Murphy has a duo threat down field in seniors Kenney Owens and Rhett Layton. Both have gone over 500 yards for the year.

Saguaro will be going for its eighth state championship in nine tries, spanning four levels of play from 5A to their current Division III placement and Williams Field will be going for their first championship having reached the 4A-II finals in 2010.

Steve Campbell led the Black Hawks to a 25-22 overtime loss to Phoenix Thunderbird in 2010 and he has the players to get it done this year.

It will be No. 1 vs. No. 2.
