Westwood FB denies Poston Butte D-II section football title

October 31, 2014 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Westwood got its backup quarterback some on the job training Friday night and didn't miss a beat in putting the wraps on a superb regular season.

Junior Ethan McGuire tossed a pair of touchdown passes and Westwood's up-tempo, mostly ground-and-pound offense led by Ethan Johnson dominated again as the Warriors denied Poston Butte the Division II Section VI title with a 32-15 triumph at Brimhall Field.

It's the first playoff berth for Westwood since 2010 when the Warriors turned in a 5-6 regular season. They lost in the opening round of the playoffs that year to Hamilton. Westwood finished the regular season 9-1--  the opposite mark of when third-year coach Spencer Stowers took over in 2012. Westwood's lone loss was a 14-7 defeat to Marcos de Niza, who ended up the section champ.

Poston Butte is likely still headed to the playoffs with a 7-3 record in coach Paul Moro's first-year at the helm although the Broncos have dropped their last two games. Poston Butte was No. 13 in the power-rankings heading into the contest. It would be Poston Butte's second playoff berth in four years. The Broncos advanced in 2011 and lost in the opening round to Liberty.

Playoff berths and seedings for Divisions I through V will be unveiled Saturday morning when brackets are released at 9 on AIA365.com's bracket show from Wolfley's Neighborhood Grill at Tatum and the 101.

Westwood used five scoring drives of between 82 and 63 yards to tally five touchdowns and never trailed. McGuire started in place of senior Kane Tieman, who sat out for a non-football-related reason, according to Stowers. McGuire opened the game throwing several short hitch passes, which seemed to catch Poston Butte off balance. McGuire completed 5-of-6 passes on Westwood's first drive for 59 yards and capped it with a 4-yard TD strike to Max Wright. for a 7-0 lead McGuire was 11-of-19 for 131 yards and one pick.

McGuire mixed in two more completions on Westwood's second scoring march that ended with a steady dose of Johnson. Westwood answered a field goal by Poston Butte with a TD for a 13-3 edge. Corey Whiting did the honors for the Warriors with a 1-yard run. Johson had 33 yards on seven carries in the drive and was just getting warmed up. He added runs of 2 and 7 yards in the second and third quarters, respectively. The second score put Westwood up 26-9. Johnson finished unofficially with 228 yards on 37 carries.

Poston Butte's standout running back Brandon Hatfield was held in check on the ground gaining just 43 yards on 16 carries. Hatfield managed to score on a 49-yard TD catch and run in the final period, breaking a couple tackles at the end to complete the tally. It came with the outcome no longer in doubt. Westwood outrushed Poston Butte 294 to 118 and the Warriors never punted on any of their 10 possessions.
