Trusiak is Brophy's center of attention

The glamour positions or star players generally get most of the attention even when it comes to teams selecting a captain.

That isn't  the case for Brophy Prep''s football team as the Broncos open their 2014 season in Las Vegas, Nev., Friday night (Aug. 22) against nationally-ranked Bishop Gorman at Fertitta Field on the campus of Bishop Gorman HS.

Center Matt Trusiak, a starter for the second successive season, was accorded the captain moniker back in January. It's a rarity in Brophy lore, at least in Scooter Molander's 10-year tenure as head coach. Senior teammate Sean Roberton, a skill position player, also is a captain. Trusiak had a lieutenant's role last year as a junior.

"A captain often is a quarterback or someone who plays a high-profile position," Molander said. "Matt was chosen captain as early as I can ever remember us picking one."

Sounds like the Broncos knew who they wanted as their leader and the choice was clear. Trusiak served an internship of sorts last year in Brophy's injury-ravaged 5-7 season.

Trusiak, a 6-foot-1, 250-pound senior, was impressive to the coaching staff  last year in the way he handled his extra responsibility. The Broncos were beat up by injury at just about every position. When last year's senior quarterback, Brian Woodward, was injured in the second game, sophomore Cade Knox was thrust into duty. Trusiak knowing an inexperienced quarterback was in the fold for several games at least, picked up on leadership skills quickly with help from a senior.

Knox was suddenly the quarterback against the likes of Hamilton, Centennial, Red Mountain and Desert Ridge  -- not your average opponents.

"i thought we've got a sophomore quarterback who is under baptism by fire," Trusiak said. "Cade had plenty of stuff to think about and worry about. I figured I could help out by making sure the offensive line was in order and had his back. It helped me having someone like AJ Hall last year showing me the ropes."

Matt Trusiak got even more preparation for his current role prior to enrolling at Brophy. It came from older brother, John. John Trusiak played defensive end for Brophy in 2010 and 2011.

"I've followed in hits footsteps," Matt Trusiak said. "I remember (John) talking to me during a Pop Warner game I was playing in. We were the underdog and getting beaten as expected. He reminded to play my heart out and don't quit no matter what."

That attitude is omnipresent with Matt Trusiak. In a quiet way he relishes the role. It's not surprising to Molander that Trusiak developed the attitude and mindset other players look up to.

"A lot of times guys who had an older brother play here pick things up quicker and have a little more idea what to expect," Molander said. "Matt is one of those guys."

Matt Trusiak carries a nearly 4.00 grade-point average with a load of AP classes. He's dabbling with the idea of majoring in marketing and minoring in psychology when he goes on to college. Right now, his focus is football and the 2014 Broncos.

"As a captain I hold myself responsible for our line and the offense," Matt Trusiak said. "But I need the other 60 guys to  know I have their back as well."
