Baseball: Highland, Campo Verde in finals of own tournaments

Austin Maltby stroked a two-run double in the third inning to put Highland ahead to stay and the Hawks posted a 5-2 semifinal victory over Williams Field on Wednesday night in the Highland Triple Play Classic at Highland High.

Highland advances to face Perry, a 5-1 winner over Seton in the other semifinal, for the tournament title on Thursday (March 13) night at 6 at Highland. Highland spotted Williams Field a 2-0 lead with the Black Hawks Chris Kobar belting a two-run homer in the top of the first.

Highland battled back behind a Ryan McCord RBI single, Maltby's two-run double and a tack on, two-run double in the sixth by Jake Brown.

In a battle of left-handers, Highland's Kevin Eversman outdueled Williams Field's Adam Lamb. Eversman went  4 2/3 innings and got picked up by teammate Vince Palermo the rest of the way to earn the save.

In the Game on Germann Invitational hosted by Campo Verde, Campo Verde qualified for the championship game there, completeing pool play 4-0 with a 10-3 win over Agua Fria. Campo Verde faces Valley Vista for the title Thursday (March 13) at 7 p.m. at Campo Verde. Valley Vista topped Higley, 11-6, on Wednesday to complete its pool play 4-0.
